UCP Research Initiative

The United Cerebral Palsy Research Committee is raising funds to support groundbreaking research on early identification and early therapeutic and biomedical intervention.

Early diagnosis of cerebral palsy and early treatment are symbiotic as one requires the other to leverage the opportunity that neuroplasticity and evolving development affords a child to have positive outcomes that result in living a life without limits.

Key Points:

  • Early diagnosis provides the opportunity for specific testing, surveillance, and treatment to prevent complications and optimize developmental neuroplasticity during a critical period in an individual’s life prior to 3 years old.
  • Focused biomedical and therapeutic interventions have the potential to change child development as never before by capitalizing on the developing brain’s creation and organization of structures, connections, and function.
  • Early biomedical treatment opportunities identifying the cause of a child’s condition allows physicians and scientists to move beyond just suppressing symptoms to focusing on the fundamental problem. Such approaches also enable the development and use of targeted therapies designed with the individual in mind.
  • Research funding will be allocated to support these areas of focus.

Circle of Promise donors receive:
  • Quarterly electronic newsletter (Life Without Limits)
  • Circle of Promise Certificate & Pin
  • A personal contact who can answer your questions throughout the year
  • Invitation to stakeholder surveys and meetings

Every day, people and families turn to UCP and our 56 affiliates to help them through the daily hurdles that come with living with a disability themselves or a disability of a loved one.

We provide access to a community, giving them a collective voice and help through peers.  And, together, we help give them access the on-the-ground services needed by these families.

This work is only possible because people like YOU who believe everyone deserves a life without limits.
